Uitspan sits in a gorgeous setting at the western end of the Baviaanskloof, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern Cape. It’s a small working farm with 10 campsites and well-appointed cottages, run by Nico and Alta. Most sites are grassed and have their own lapa with chairs, table, braai and bins. Some campsites offer private his-and-hers ablutions; others share neat facilities that are cleaned daily, with hand soap and towels provided — “a plus when one keeps forgetting to take one’s own”. All sites have electricity. The farm is peaceful and refreshing, with two hiking trails through rock pools, native trees, and rock formations. Nearby San rock art is preserved in a cave. There’s no cellphone coverage, so be prepared to disconnect. Dogs allowed low season only. Jessie the Jack Russell is a resident stone-chaser. A zip line into the dam and owner-built inventions like the “Garbage Removal Motorbike” add charm. “Highly recommend a stay at Uitspan when in the Baviaanskloof.”
