Rooihoek Campsite sits deep in the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve, a Cape Floristic Region protected area and UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its 7 biomes. It’s managed by the Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency and offers 6 well-spaced rustic sites near the river, with Campsite 1 having the best water access. This is wild camping: there are no power points, no water points, and no ablutions except communal long drop toilets. You must bring all drinking and washing water, firewood, and supplies. Each site has a braai, but facilities are not well maintained. All rubbish must be taken out with you. The setting is spectacular — mountain views, river beach for cooling off, and wildlife including kudu, duiker, genet, and buffalo at night.
